Volkswagen of America collaborated with Salvador Vega, renowned artist and muralist from the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois where he resides, to paint an all-electric ID.4. Applying Vega’s lively art to the ID.4 is intended to bring greater awareness to Hispanic culture and inspire further celebration within Pilsen and the local Hispanic communities.
The design showcases both a bright side and a dark side, signifying a type of rebirth which is a common theme within Mexican art and culture. Salvador Vega shares, “The idea of the patterns I implemented are of circular nature in a flowing motion. [The appearance] of scales and feathers work in combination to signify mythical creatures. The Mexican culture has a beautiful example of this called, Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent. The design is also recognizing a Mexican tradition of the alebrijes in a metamorphosis. I projected this on the vehicle as a symbol of transformation and movement.”
